VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – “There’s a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump.”

It’s statements like that one from Trump Trade Adviser Peter Navarro that has Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval rating up 12 points, according to a new survey.

A new poll by the Angus Reid Institute now suggests Canadians love what the federal government is doing in our trade tiff with the U.S.

The survey shows the prime minister’s approval rating has surged from 40 per cent to 52 per cent over the past few months.

The pollster thinks that has a lot to do with how Trudeau is handling the trade file.

So is this actually support for him, or is it driven by Canadians’ distaste for the U.S. president?

“Well no doubt Trump as a foil to Trudeau is politically for Justin Trudeau a very helpful thing,” explains the institute’s Shachi Kurl. “The general dislike and negative perception of Donald Trump among Canadians is quite high.”

The Angus Reid survey shows Canadians are also in favour of Ottawa’s harder line in negotations with its counterparts in Washington, D.C.

Seven in ten of those polled, in fact, preferring to risk further annoying Trump rather than taking a more traditionally softer — Canadian — approach.

The most recent poll says “bully” is the word Canadians think of when they think of Trump.
